ABOUT MARY MACKINNON

Stepping onto the dock in Santos, Brazil, was the beginning of a big change in my life. My life had been full of changes. I was born in Mississippi, raised and married in Minnesota, had studied in 12 different schools and lived in 27 different houses, worked in 10 different jobs through the years, and 10 years earlier had moved to California. Now I faced the biggest change of all.

My husband and I, our two teenaged girls and baby boy were headed for the southwestern jungle frontier of Brazil to begin life as missionaries. There we would be faced with things we had never encountered before: a house encircled by jungle; the road in front only a dirt trail, impassable in rainy weather; an outside bathroom; kerosene lamps for light; no phones or electricity… But probably most significant of all, instead of English, we would be listening to Portuguese, a language of which we knew almost nothing.

Those changes came and the Lord helped us weather them all. More changes followed – an orange orchard instead of jungle, a paved road, indoor bathroom, electricity, phones, and a good-sized town that sprang up about four miles away. Best of all was the church that was started on our front porch (after we learned enough Portuguese to cope with it). It began as a children's meeting and expanded into a church that later moved to town and is now flourishing and sending missionaries.
